Offa’s poly students protest cancellation of exam waiver

…management says don’t go back on canceling waiver for failed classes
The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, has insisted that it will not reverse its decision on the cancellation of the deferral exam waiver for final year students. year of establishment.
The students of the establishment, had launched during the last two weeks in the protest around the commune of Offa and had even approached the traditional chief, Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi, the Olofa of Offa, to bring the direction of the polytechnic school to reconsider its decision to cancel the exam exemption generally granted to final year students who have failed certain courses during their stay at the school.
Other issues raised by the students during their protest against Olofa last week on Monday were the deplorable state of the hostels, the lack of water and electricity in the hostels, the waiver of postponements and the fact of allowing students who had not yet paid tuition fees to take exams.
They argued that the school should allow students to take exams and withhold results pending payment of fees.
During their demonstration, they vandalized vehicles belonging to staff members of the institution and caused traffic jams on the main Osogbo-Offa-Ilorin road.
The Olofa, however, promised to speak with the institution’s management and also promised to provide a 500 kva transformer to the institution’s hostels on the permanent site and its surroundings to provide a stable power supply.
Reacting to our correspondent’s investigation of the protest, Federal Polytechnic Offa’s director of media and corporate affairs, Mr. Olayinka Iroye, who said the students had brought the issues to prominent figures in the region. , including the monarch, said while management had also taken proactive action on certain issues, the postponement exam waiver complaint could not be overturned as it was a decision of the academic council.
“There is no turning back on the waiver for the postponement of the exam because it is a decision of the academic council. The protest of the students on the matter is wrong and when something goes wrong, it does not There is no good solution to provide to redeem it.Those who have deferral courses must take and pass the exam before they can be qualified for the Federal Polytechnic, Offa certificate.
Regarding the power outage and water supply to the hostels, Iroye said the water supply was insufficient due to the school’s poor power supply and the high cost of diesel.
“We have about eight hostels in the temporary and permanent sites of the institution and all the hostels have boreholes which provide water to the students, but we have experienced erratic power supply and even in the city this is responsible for poor water supply for hostels.
“The school spent millions of naira on buying diesel which the school could no longer afford due to the high cost of diesel. Students pay only N20,000 per student as accommodation costs, which can no longer cover the high cost of diesel.
